Assault by Auto & DWI Charges Issued in Randolph NJ
A twenty (20) year old Morristown resident was arrested and charged with among other things, assault by auto and driving while intoxicated (DWI). According to the information released thus far, the Defendant allegedly drove his Toyota Rav 4 through a barricade at a road construction site just before 1am Thursday morning. To make matters worse, once the Defendant broke through the barricade he struck a police vehicle that was on safety patrol. Apparently the collision was pretty significant, not only did it cause extensive damage to the two vehicles but it also sent one of the officers to the hospital. Based on the accident, the Defendant was put through several standardized field sobriety tests (SFST). As a result of those tests, the Defendant was placed under arrest and taken back to the Randolph Police Station where he was formally charged with DWI, assault by auto, possession of marijuana under 50 grams, possession of drug paraphernalia and several ancillary traffic tickets as well. The Defendant was released on a summons pending a future court appearance in the Randolph Municipal Court for his arraignment. Since the the assault by auto charge is a felony offense, his matter will be transferred up to the Morris County Prosecutor’s office for review. He should have a Central Judicial Processing (CJP) date scheduled for the near future.
