It has been announced that the Township of Jefferson will be conducting a driving while intoxicated (DWI) checkpoint this weekend in an effort to make their streets safer. These checkpoints will be held on Friday September 23 and Saturday September 24. However, it is unclear at this point in time where exactly the DWI checkpoint will be held. Not just the Township of Jefferson but Morris County as a whole has been conducting these random checkpoints as a result of a grant that the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office received from the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety. These grants were given in effort to combat the recent increase in not only DUI charges but assault and death by auto charges that Morris County has been dealing with.
The penalties that stem from a DWI conviction in New Jersey are bad enough let alone a conviction for assault by auto as well. DWI / DUI charges in New Jersey are considered traffic offenses but almost all assault by auto are felony offenses. Offenses that will not only leave you with a felony conviction on your record but also may land you in State Prison as well.
