An Extended Stay America hotel located in Mount Olive, New Jersey was the victim of an attempted robbery last week. According to the reports released at this point in time, the Defendant, a twenty-six year old male from Roxbury, New Jersey entered the hotel lobby just after 5am wielding a wrench and demanded that the employee turn over the money in the register. When the employee resisted, the Defendant fled the scene without receiving any money. By the time the police arrived the Defendant had already fled the scene.
However, based on the description given by the employee an officer from the Roxbury Police Department was able to develop a lead. Apparently the officer had an interaction with the Defendant the prior evening and knew he was staying at a local motel in Roxbury. Geared with that information, the officers were able to apprehend the Defendant without incident. He was arrested and formally charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose and attempted robbery. The attempted robbery is the most serious charge, it is a second degree felony offense in New Jersey. In addition, it is also subject to the No Early Release Act (NERA) as well. Therefore, if convicted the Defendant faces up to ten (10) years in a State Prison and because of NERA he must serve at least 85% of his sentence before he can become eligible for parole. The Defendant was taken to the Morris County Jail and bail was set at $100,000 with no ten percent option. The Defendant is most likely scheduled to appear at what is known as his Central Judicial Processing Hearing next week. This hearing will take place in the Morris County Superior Courthouse which is located in Morristown, New Jersey.
