A twenty-seven (27) year old male from Wayne, New Jersey is in critical condition following an incident at the Riverdale Walmart. Apparently the Defendant was observed attempting to leave the store with a shopping cart full of merchandize prior to paying for the items. When confronted by store personal the Defendant fled the scene and ran towards the back parking lot. When he got to the back he jumped over a fence but unfortunately for the Defendant located on the other side of the fence was the Tilcon Riverdale Quarry, which depending on where you enter from, could be about a 20 to 100 foot drop off.
When officers arrived on scene, they began to canvas the Tilcon Riverdale Quarry looking for the Defendant. When the located the Defendant they realized he was unconscious and in need of serious medical attention. They were able to excavate the Defendant from the Quarry and he was flown to St. Joseph Hospital in Paterson New Jersey. The Defendant is alleged to suffer extensive internal injuries along with several broken bones.
To make matters worse the value of the items in the cart totaled just under $500 so the Defendant was charged with shoplifting in the fourth degree. Once he is medical discharged from the hospital he will have to appear at his Central Judicial Process Hearing at the Morris County Superior Courthouse. At that hearing he will be arraigned and an Early Disposition Conference date will be set. During that hearing the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office will determine if they want to retain jurisdiction over the case or remand it back to the Riverdale Municipal Court.
