Earlier this week another bank in Rockaway, New Jersey has been robbed. According to the minimal reports released at this point in time, the TD Bank which is located at 326 Mount Hope Ave in Rockaway was robbed just before 10 am on Wednesday morning. It appears that a white male “in his late 20s or early 30s and was wearing a dark-colored baseball cap, black sunglasses, a white tee shirt, tan shorts, black gloves and a black backpack” entered the TD Bank and demanded one of the employees turn over the cash in her draw. Due to the fact that the suspect was able to flee the scene and is yet to be apprehended it is unclear what if any money was actually taken. The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit an the Rockaway Police Department are looking for any information that may help crack the case.
What is unclear at this point in time whether or not a weapon or threat of a weapon was used by the suspect to facilitate the offense (robbery). The importance of that fact could make the difference between a potential 10 – 20 year prison sentence as opposed to a 5 – 10 year prison sentence if the suspect is caught and later convicted. As you can tell, the offense of robbery in New Jersey is taken very seriously and it is obviously heightened when a bank is involved. Unfortunately most bank robberies that are occurring in Morris County are stemming from an addict trying to fund his addiction. Heroin abuse has been on a steady rise for almost five years now in New Jersey and is often directly related to these types of offenses. The Prosecutor’s office and local police departments throughout Morris County have been extremely active trying to get ahold of the heroin epidemic that has been sweeping through the State.
