Teenager Crashes Stolen Car in Parsippany After Eluding Police
It appears that a New Jersey State Trooper first spotted the stolen minivan in Rockaway on Route 80. However, when he attempted to pull over the minivan, the driver took off. The basis for the stop was because the minivan was reported stolen out of Pennsylvania. According to the officer, the driver was driving in excess of 100 mph during the chase. The driver of the minivan eventually lost control of the van and crashed it in Parsippany, New Jersey. According to the reports, both occupants were ejected from the vehicle and suffered various injuries.
The driver has been identified as a sixteen (16) year old Pennsylvania resident. The passenger was also from Pennsylvania and he was fourteen (14) years old. The fourteen year old was taken to the Morris County Juvenile Detention Center, while the sixteen year old was taken first to Morristown Medical Center for treatment. He was eventually released from the hospital and taken to the Morris County Juvenile Detention Center as well.
The identity of the juveniles has not been released due to their ages.. They will most likely be charged with eluding in the second degree and receiving stolen property in the third degree. Since they are juveniles, the maximum exposure the Defendant’s can face is five (5) years in a Juvenile Detention Center (3 years on the eluding and 2 on the receiving stolen property). With that being said, there is a possibility due to their age and the egregiousness of their alleged conduct that the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office may try to waive the juveniles up and prosecute them as adults. If that is the case, the Defendant’s face up to fifteen (15) years in a State Prison. For more information on the Juvenile Criminal Justice System, please click here.
